Our annual fixture. We were a bit short of dancers, but we
improvised and got through the day!
I did solve a puzzle that has vexed me for years. Until about 10-15
years ago, ferret-racing was a hugely popular feature of Warfield Fete,
and it disappeared. This year, I spotted a stall advertising
ferret-racing, and went to investigate. The stall was offering the
opportunity for a child to race against a ferret through various parallel
obstacles and tubes. Thus it wasn't a competition between ferrets
and people couldn't buy inexpensive tickets to "bet" on their chosen
ferret. It seems that the traditional ferret races unintentially
fell within the scope of a revision to the Gaming Act some years ago,
which required the ferret-racing fraternity to have an expensive gaming
licence. Another tradition destroyed by bumbledom.
