Bracknell Lexicon Centre - National Civic Day
16th June 2018

National Civic Day was announced by one government or another some years ago, as an occasion to celebrate civic pride. It was then quietly forgotten by both national and local government alike.

Never mind! It seemed an appropriate occasion to go and dance in Bracknell's newly "regenerated" town centre - known as The Lexicon Centre.

We enlisted the help of Lynda and the U3A dance team, and the Easthampstead Rotary Club. Maybe - just maybe - we started an annual event. I hope so.

The designated "performance space" in the Lexicon is brand new and has the warmth and ambience of one of the Farnborough wind tunnels, but I know they are working to improve it. We'll see how it turns out.

OBJ comprised: Alison, Ann, Chris, Colin, Eddie, IanJ, Jane, Joe, Karen, Lawre, Linda, Lorraine, Mark, Mike, Sarah and Vera

One of Bracknells many mayors opened the proceedings.

As a one-time Yateley Morris Man, he managed Dilwyn quite well

This is Brimfield - a village almost as attractive as Bracknell

Ian, Eddie and Mike are facing Ann, Linda and Karen

The same dance, coming to an end as Eddie and Mike dance off

...... followed by Karen, Linda and Ann

The view from the steps - Waitrose in the background

Another dance - possibly Much Gridlock

It's based on the Much Wenlock Stick Dance, but modified and renamed to celebrate Berkshire's traffic conditions

The sign tells us that the colossal monolith in the background will be a collection of high specification apartments. I wonder what the future occupants will make of the performances below

Ian, Karen and Sarah are amongst the dancers

The band

Jane, Vera, Colin, Linda, Joe and Lawre

These steps have since been covered with astro-turf, making them a little more hospitable

Karen, Ian, Mike and Sarah are just dancing off at the end of Sheepskins

This may be Tide

Eddie, Mike and Karen in the foreground

Ann and Karen with Lynda singing in the background

M&S, with a few OBJ people nearby

Chris, with Jess

Joe and Lawre, amused by something

Perhaps it was the sight of this East Acton being set up

It seemed to go well.

And came to an end in an orderly fashion

Linda, Peter-the-Rotarian and Ian followed by some of the U3A dancers and members of the audience

Well, that all went better than I expected

Colin and Karen having a chill
